App Store sets sales records on New Year’s Day


$240 million customer purchases on January 1st, 2017.

Apple has just announced that its App Store has earned more than $240 million on a single day last new year day. This caps a record-breaking holiday season for the company, with developers earning more than $20 billion from app purchases.

“2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with Jan. 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created — which together with our products — help to truly enrich people’s lives.”

Along with this, December saw the most profitable month for the App Store, which the company says has earned $3 billion. A big part of this was the exclusive release of Nintendo’s Super Mario Run that was downloaded more than 40 million times in just four days. It was also the most downloaded a globally during Christmas and New Year’s Day. Super Mario Run and Pokémon Go were among the top apps of 2016.

Since the App Store launched in 2008, developers have earned over $60 billion, creating amazing app experiences for App Store customers across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Mac. With this recent announcement, it looks like Apple’s 2017 is off to a great start!
