Limited stocks and huge demand may be the cause.
It happens every year with every major smartphone release – prices of new smartphones costing 1000 – 2000 AED more than the normal price. Take the case of the Apple iPhone 7 – even when the UAE was part of the first batch of countries to get the coveted device, the grey market was still selling it at a premium since stocks were low particularly with the black and jet black variants.
The same case is now happening with Apple’s AirPods. The wireless headphones have been delayed due to production constraints, which Apple addressed as already ramping up to meet the demands. But even if you try to order online there is about 6 weeks of waiting time. Even local online retailers are selling them at a higher price.
If you roam around the small shops in Dubai, many have stocks of the Apple AirPods – but most of them cost around 1500 AED minimum, a couple of hundred dirhams more than the suggested 649 AED price.
