If you live (or have been) to Dubai, then you must know the ever-reliable Nol card. This reloadable card was introduced as the main mode of payment for all public transport services in the city. But now it is evolving into something more – you can now use your Nol cards in shops to pay for groceries.

The announcement was made by the Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA) who confirmed that you can use the Nol card to pay for transactions on more than 1,000 retail outlets in Dubai. This move is part of the city’s initiatives towards becoming a smart city.

“Users of Nol card in Dubai are now able to make quick and easy payments for purchases using their existing cards at POS terminals located at leading retailers across Dubai where the Nol cardholders simply tap the card on the terminal similar to how they access the transit system. The network of retailers accepting Nol cards is projected to exceed 5,000 by the end of this year,” confirmed Abdulla Al Madani, CEO of RTA’s Corporate Technology Support Services Sector.

“The roll-out of this solution will indisputably further Dubai’s ambition to be the world’s smartest city within 3 years by harnessing the latest technologies and most advanced methods for realizing this objective. This initiative also incorporates excellence and innovation, which are vital pillars to fully realize the smart city vision,” continued Al Madani.
