It is none other than Nissan (yes, as in Nissan motors) who has stepped up to save the butter-fingered of the world, creating a scratch-proof phone-protecting case that can repair itself after an accident, a la Wolverine.
Developed by Nissan in collaboration with the University of Tokyo back in 2005, this mythical case has a coat of polyrotaxane, a molecule that can react to structural changes (e.g. a scratch), returning to its original conformation and filling the gap autonomously.
While we have yet to see this in action, we imagine the scene to be very much sci-fi like - you know, where the skin magically closes in on a wound - but we're probably overly optimistic, and a microscope could be required to see what's happening here. We got one readied just "in case" it shows up on our desk.
Nissan demonstrated the use of its new material in an iPhone case, at an automotive show in Dubai, UAE. Hopefully we'll get you some pictures/video soon, so stay tuned to this channel.
Until then, hold on tight to your precious. Salvation is near.
