Researchers from New York University’s Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Design for Excellence (Dfx) lab have managed to create and develop a new computer chip technology that’s secured by a secret key that basically makes it ‘unhackable’. The ‘logic-locked’ computer chip is immune to reverse engineering, one of the popular ways hackers gain access to a locked device.

Normally most security features are only implemented on the software level but on this particular chip, the security is placed right on the hardware. The researchers said that because of this it is more difficult to crack the security if the hardware is compromised. The chip can only be unlocked through the binary key that needs to be loaded on its memory. The binary key and the chip work hand-in-hand so if there's no key, then it cannot be unlocked.

The ARM-based processors are compatible and/or similar with the ones you will find on a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet, meaning that you can easily create and load a software program onto it. at the moment, the team is finding ways to enable the validation of the security of the new chips.

Our goal is to make all electronics truly trustworthy. We are now in a position where we can take any chip design and transform it into one that is secure at the hardware level, which means we can work with design companies to help them produce protected computer chips,” Sinanoglu added.

More details about the supposed ‘unhackable’ chip is discussed in the video below:
