Twitter officially enabled 280-character tweets for everyone today after months of testing for selected users. The company stressed that most users tweet lesser because of the 140-character limit, and after enabling the feature for some, more users have started to tweet more often.

Twitter detailed their studies in a blog post https://blog.twitter.com/official/en_us/topics/product/2017/tweetingmade... and mentioned that the 280 character limit won’t always be used in full by users. In principle they’re just giving everyone more room to express themselves with one single tweet.

The study also showed that users who had more room to tweet tend to get more engagement in the form of likes, retweets and mentions. “People in the experiment told us that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall,” they said in the blog post.

While the 280-character limit will be enabled for everyone, Japanese, Korean and Chinese users will still have the 140-character limit since of the way the languages are written. For them, a couple of characters already means a whole sentence in English.
